Yash Chopra breathed his last in Mumbai today. He had been admitted to Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai following an attack of dengue fever.  This "young-at-heart" director had just turned 80 on September 27th, 2012 and was busy completing his latest celluloid romance - Jab Tak Hai Jaan, starring Shahrukh Khan and Katrina Kaif.

Sahir Ludhianvi wrote songs for 16 movies under the combined B R Films and Yash Raj films banner. Of these, 7 were directed by Yash Chopra: 
Dhool Ka Phool (1959), Dharamputra (1961) , Waqt (1965), Aadmi Aur Insaan (1969), Daag (1973), Kabhi Kabhi (1976), Kala Patthar (1979). 

The last three were made under the YashRaj Films banner. 

Yash Chopra also directed three movies under the Trimurti Films Banner which had songs by Sahir - Joshila (1973), Deewar (1975) and Trishul (1978).

We will be paying our tribute to this legendary director with songs from the movies he  directed  and which had songs written by Sahir Ludhianvi.

The alphabetic song index (A to L and M to Z) have been updated and the lists now reflect all the Sahir songs I have been able track down with the help of some very enthusiastic friends and well-wishers.

The song by movie index is also updated and lists all the movies with the songs written by Sahir. Movies with songs by other lyricists are identified with ***.

The movie index pages have been updated. I believe the list of movies is now complete. Existing lists had the  movies sorted by year, title and music director.  In addition, I have added an index of movies by music director and by year.

Film and song stats have been updated based on the completion of song and movie inventory. Here are some of the updated numbers:

Number of movies: 121, including one Punjabi, two Pakistani and two unreleased movies. 
Number of songs: 733 songs

I am grateful to  Qaseem Abbasi for providing the information about the Pakistani movies. 

The Film and Song primary pages have been updated. Added a few tables on these pages for better presentation. 

A new table on the Songs page has been added showing the breakdown of songs by singer. Asha Bhonsle leads with 223 songs (solos, duets, group songs combined) followed by Mohd. Rafi (188 songs) and  Lata Mangeshkar (160 songs) .

Now begins the work on the film and song list updates, to be followed by the song lyrics.

Updated the alphabetic index of songs and added a page for songs by movies. This is a work in
progress. Movie list is complete. Song list by movie needs to be added.

Songs for Sahir's first movie - Azadi Ki Raah Par have been listed. Music was by G. D. Kapoor and director was Lalit Mehta. The movie was also known as Swatantra Ke Path Par.

There were a couple of other songs in the movie written by others. One was written by Ramprasad Bismil and the other is unknown but the song is well-known - "jhanDaa ooNchaa rahe hamaaraa".

Unfortunately I have not heard these songs nor do I have the lyrics for them. Will keep looking.
